Caramel Marshmallow Caffè Breve

I went wayyyy too far with this recipe! I wanted to try something new and interesting. Let's just say that I got carried away, and it was not the best.

While looking for recipes, I was wondering if there was a way I could use a coffee recipe with marshmallows. I came across a caramel marshmallow recipe that used marshmallow coffee creamer. This led me to create a marshmallow sauce. The recipe I used was ineffective. ut, like everything else, we live and learn, right?! I'm still going to document this process to look back on one day.

If you have advice for this one, I am willing to change it and credit you for what I can do differently. 😉

My intent for the marshmallow sauce was to mix it with half and half to create my own creamer. I found this recipe online, it was late at night, and I could only use what was in my pantry. Instead of using corn syrup, I used agave syrup.

Creating the sauce took way too long, so I knew I was doing it wrong. However, the result was this darker-colored syrup that tasted heavenly! I actually mean that. Although the sauce was not exactly what it was supposed to be, it still tasted really good.

I also learned that when you make coffee with steamed half and half instead of milk, it becomes what is called a Caffè Breve. This is a new term I will hopefully be able to remember.

Once I created the sauce, I made hot coffee because I knew that would be the only way the sauce was going to mix in with half and half mixture. The rest of the coffee mixture went well and as follows:

Caramel Marshmallow Caffè Breve Recipe

Brew: Rich (strong)

Serving Size: 1 (16-ounce) cup

  • 3 tablespoons ground coffee

  • 1/3 cup half and half

  • 3 tbsp Marshmallow sauce

  • Caramel Syrup

  • 1 16-Ounce Cup

  1. Make the marshmallow sauce as followed. I used agave rather than corn syrup (not recommended)

  2. Place grounds into brew reservoir and the cup under reservoir

  3. Select the Rich setting and size XL to brew the coffee

  4. While the coffee is brewing, steam the half and half (I chose to put it in the microwave for 40 seconds and then froth it)

  5. Once the coffee is brewed, pour 3 tbsp of the marshmallow sauce into the hot coffee, stir

  6. Holding back the top foam with a spoon, pour in the steamed half and half, stir

  7. Optional: add the foam from the steamed half and half to the top (I topped the coffee with the foam of the marshmallow sauce instead)

  8. Drizzle caramel sauce on top for an extra creamy flavor

  9. Enjoy!

This caffè breve was extremely thick and STICKY! Like most of my drinks that actually require espresso rather than brewed coffee, I think this drink could use a lot of improvement. First, I am going to stick to using flavored simple syrups over sauces. I was hoping it would blend in well, but the consistency was too thick to turn into a "creamer."

I am not going to give up on this recipe, though. Marshmallow is delicious, and the sauce had great flavor, just not for coffee. I am putting this recipe on the back-burner to continue trying when I get in the "inventive" mood.

Overall rating with the drink as is: 1 star
